In the top of the first inning, Venezuela took the lead for good when Carlos Mendoza scored after being given a balk.
Cesar Ortega grounded into a double play in the bottom of the second inning, and the Netherlands, ranked eighth in the world, demonstrated superb defensive skills at second and third base.
Jeferson Morales was responsible for Venezuela’s second run. He doubled to the left center field and then scored after Mendoza hit a single and an error occurred. Mendoza also singled.
In the bottom of the third inning, Amador Arias was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Jesus Chirinos’ single, and scored what would turn out to be Venezuela’s final run while the Dutch were completing another double play.
