A run was scored by Venezuela in each of the first three innings of the game. The starting pitcher, Carlos Naveda, worked all five innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four batters.

In the first game of the Placement Round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup played at the Dou-Liou Stadium, Venezuela’s starting pitcher Carlos Naveda was outstanding on the mound as he went five innings with four strikes, allowed only one hit, and walked one batter to power Venezuela’s 3-0 win over the Netherlands. The game was played during the first day of competition.

Each team played five games in the first round, and then carried their results from that round into the second part of the competition.

Even though Venezuela no longer have a chance to defend their title, they nevertheless displayed their determination to do so by beginning the game by drawing a walk from the Netherlands’ Jayden Gonesh, which was then followed by a hit and another walk drawn by the same player. In the top of the first inning, Venezuela took the lead for good when Carlos Mendoza scored after being given a balk.

Cesar Ortega grounded into a double play in the bottom of the second inning, and the Netherlands, ranked eighth in the world, demonstrated superb defensive skills at second and third base.

Jeferson Morales was responsible for Venezuela’s second run. He doubled to the left center field and then scored after Mendoza hit a single and an error occurred. Mendoza also singled.

In the bottom of the third inning, Amador Arias was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Jesus Chirinos’ single, and scored what would turn out to be Venezuela’s final run while the Dutch were completing another double play.
