The Puerto Rico team was led to victory by Yadiel Rolon, who threw a perfect game. The ‘Boricuas’ won the game 10-0 in five innings, ending the contest early.
On Thursday, in the Placement Round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup, Puerto Rico defeated South Africa 10-0. The victory only required five innings to complete for Puerto Rican.
The starting pitcher, Yadiel Rolon, was able to complete the game, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out four batters.
The game got off to a rousing start for Puerto Rico, as they quickly eliminated the opening two hitters for South Africa with a double play. After Puerto Rico had their time at bat, Ezequiel Pagan started things off with a triple down the right field line. His teammates then drove him in to give them a 1-0 lead.
Pagan was not content with just one hit and one run, so he smacked a single to left field in the third inning to score another run for Puerto Rico. His name is now credited with two runs, three hits, and one RBI.
In spite of Pagan’s outstanding performance, it was Glenn Santiago’s important single that sparked Puerto Rico’s 8-0 rally over South Africa, which first powered Shawn Ross’ run. Pagan’s performance was also a contributing factor. After Kade Smith’s walk loaded the bases, Dilan Rosario’s sacrifice fly brought both of his teammates Santiago and Misael Gonzalez across the plate. Kade Smith’s walk helped load the bases. At the end of the fifth inning, Puerto Rico had a 5-0 lead.
At the end of the game, the whole Puerto Rico lineup came to bat
The two relievers for South Africa, Evan Maritz and Johannes Booyens, were responsible for allowing a total of five hits, five runs, and two walks while facing the Puerto Rican batters.
In the fifth inning, Puerto Rican scored five runs with only one out remaining, and they went on to win the game early by a score of 10-0.
They now have a record of 2-1 in the Placement Round and will play Germany on Friday, 21 October at 17:00 local time. South Africa, on the other hand, will play the Netherlands at 14:00 and hope to get their first win of the tournament.
