It was sufficient for Cuba’s offense that they scored two runs in the second inning, when they also collected four of their six hits. When it was Venezuela’s turn to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, the potentially game-winning run was on base.

Cuba defeated Venezuela by a score of 2-0 in the Placement Round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup on Friday. Carlos Monier and Andrys Perez gave Cuba the lead in the top of the second inning against Venezuela. This was enough for Cuba to earn their second victory of the tournament.

Cuba’s starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez walked three batters in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases with runners. However, he was able to get out of the jam by striking out the next two hitters. Over the course of four innings, he gave up just two hits.

In Cuba’s second at-bat

Pedro Revilla’s double proved to be the only run production they required as they scored two runs thanks to a triple by Carlos Monier and a double by Andrys Perez. These runs proved to be enough for Cuba to win.

After a dominant performance in the first round against South Africa, Wikelman Ramirez, the starting pitcher for Venezuela, took the mound for the second game. He once more appeared to be in good shape. After giving up four of a total of six hits in the top of the second, he continued to pitch for another 6.1 innings and struck out nine batters before being replaced by reliever Jose Guzman.

Cuba’s Leodan Reyes took the mound in the fifth inning and went three innings, allowing only one hit while striking out three.

The bottom of the seventh inning presented Venezuela with its best opportunity to score. Yoandy Rea hit a single and advanced to third thanks to an error made by the defense when there were two outs remaining. Jeferson Morales, who was batting for Venezuela and was about to smash a fly ball to the shortstop, was put out of the game by Reyes, who then retired the batter.

At 11 o’clock local time, Cuba will play their final game of the Placement Round against South Africa. At 14 o’clock local time, Venezuela will play their final game of the round against Puerto Rico.
