On Friday, the Super Round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup was played between Colombia and Australia. Colombia defeated Australia 8-6 thanks to Branlyn Jaraba’s four RBIs.
The third baseman blasted a home run good for two runs as well as a double that loaded the bases. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Australia had the chance to score the run that would tie the game. Both teams have been eliminated from contention for a medal.
Jaraba struck a two-run home run in the second inning, which placed Colombia in the lead. He then hit a bases-loaded double in the fifth at-bat, which resulted in four runs and provided enough runs to shield Colombia’s bullpen from a comeback attempt by Australia.
Jaraba hit a home run off of Dylan Clarke as the third batter of the game, and Bryan Buelva added a two-RBI double as the designated hitter in the top of the second inning of the game.
In the bottom of the inning, Australia scored their comeback run by hitting five singles against Victor Vargas. Right fielder Travis Bazzana and shortstop Jarryd Dale each got hits that drove in runs for Australia. In the end, Australia would have a 12-7 advantage in hits over Colombia, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the upset.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Australia was able to cut the deficit to just one run thanks to Dale’s second RBI hit of the day.
In the top of the fifth inning, Colombia took the lead for good against the right-handed Jayden Bastow, who was the third Australian pitcher. Bastow had given a leadoff double to Hector Martinez, the shortstop for Colombia. Then he intentionally walked Buelvas and hit Carlos Arroyo, who was playing second base, which set the stage for Jaraba.
As a result of Jaraba’s double, two runs were scored, and a third run was scored as a result of a failed relay, which allowed him to score the eighth run on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Australia was able to get to reliever Luis Arrieta. Following a double by the catcher, Alex Hall, the designated hitter Mitchell Edwards then drove in a run with a single. Clayton Campbell, the third baseman, was intentionally walked by Arrieta, and then Solomon Maguire, the center fielder, hit a triple to score all of the runs.
Colombia made a fast call to the bullpen for José Altamiranda
Left fielder Tyson Zamora, who was in the batter’s box to represent the potential tying run, worked the count all the way through before striking out looking at a breaking ball to end the game.
The eleventh-ranked team in the world, Colombia, will wrap up their Super Round run against the third-ranked team in the world, Korea, on Saturday morning at 10:00 local time. At 19:00, the tenth-ranked team in the world, Australia, will play their final game against the second-ranked team in the world, Chinese Taipei.
